The first graph gives information about travel to and from the UK while the second graph describes changes of the average length of stay by UK and overseas residents over a period of 20 years.

Overall, it is clear that the numbers of visits to the UK and trips abroad from the UK increased gradually from 1982 to 2002. Furthermore, an opposite trend was seen in the average length of stay during visits over the given period.

The number of trips to the UK by foreigners stood at around 10 million in 1982 and grew steadily to 25 million by the final year. By contrast, the figure for outbound visits by residents of the UK started at 20 million before climbing significantly to above 50 million in the last year of the 20-year period.

In 1982, an average UK traveler was abroad for under 13 nights in comparison with 12 nights in the UK of international visitors. Over the following 20 years, the number of nights spent in the UK by foreign visitors fell to 8 nights, a decrease of 4 nights compared with 1982, whereas the average length of stay abroad by UK citizens was 10 nights in 2002.
