^ agree with you. past continuous worked well with the question. I think that tense also show the time from when "he wasn't listening" to the present, that he was thinking something include, that's all appropriate with the usage of that tense.

you are just thinking too much. When A ask about something that happened in the past, B should also answer about the past, as simple as that.
