SOCCER: Dispatches from Hanoi Vietnam's cause not helped by having 7 of their best behind bars

07/17/2007
BY ANDREW MITCHELL

STAFF WRITER

HANOI--Japan coach Ivica Osim said before last night's Group B finale that all the advantages were with Vietnam--they had the home support, they were used to the weather and they had nothing to lose.

He forgot to mention one significant drawback Vietnam are still coping with: Seven of their best players are behind bars.

The seven were sentenced to up to four years each three months prior to the start of the Asian Cup for their involvement in a match-fixing scandal at the Southeast Asian Games in the Philippines in December 2005.

It's a considerable oversight by Osim to say the least.

Imagine Japan without seven of their best players. How intimidating would the team be, for example, without the likes of Shunsuke Nakamura, Naohiro Takahara and Yuji Nakazawa in the lineup?

And yet Osim would still have a deep talent pool from which to replace his seven samurai. Vietnam's substitutes, on the other hand, have come from the shallow end of a kiddy pool.

Let's face it, the country may love its soccer, but it's no Brazil. Naturally gifted players do not grow on trees here.

Vietnam's achievements at the Asian Cup are all the more impressive because of this considerable handicap.

Vietnam manager Alfred Riedl made wholesale changes to his squad ahead of the tournament, handing places in his roster to no fewer than a dozen U-23 players. In the most significant break with the past, Riedl made one of those youngsters, 21-year-old striker Le Cong Vinh, captain of his retooled squad.

Riedl said he was proud of the way his players had come together at the tournament, and said it was the team's duty to repay the fans for their support during a trying couple of years.

"The fans have stood by us through it all and we wanted to make it up to them with a good performance at the tournament," Riedl said at training on the weekend. "This team has more willingness than the one two years ago, its fighting spirit is better. The players I have now are willing and determined and without that there would be no progress."

Or jail time.

And speaking of punishable offenses, your man in 'Nam appeared on the Vietnamese nightly news on Friday to share his infinite wisdom with the nation. Unfortunately, I was so overcome with patriotic zeal that I stopped just short of waving the flag and blowing kisses at the cameras. When asked to predict the outcome of last night's match, I had Vietnam winning in a landslide (8-0 by halftime, anyone?).

To make up for my sickening smarminess, the next day I told a local newspaper I thought Japan would probably win 4-1, especially if they scored early.

But before the end of that interview, the sycophant in me had kicked in again and I added; "Then again, it's been a tournament of upsets. I see no reason why Vietnam couldn't provide the latest surprise."

Worse still, the footage of my 15 minutes of shame has made it into the hands of the TV Asahi crew, who are considering sending it to Japan for airing. Should they be so cruel, I ask that you kindly avert your eyes.

(Note to self: Refuse any further requests for interviews for the remainder of the tournament.)

P.S.--Go Vietnam!

In a country as hot as this one, it's only logical that fashion rarely constitutes more than a T-shirt, a pair of shorts and flip-flops.

But for a growing number of uber-hip youngsters, a new style with roots in Tokyo has become all the rage, according to the Vietnam News.

Harajuku, as the style is known, is reportedly based on fashions made popular in Tokyo's trendiest area for adolescents. "Color clashing" is not only preferred, it's required.

"Color-coordinated outfits are a thing of the past," the newspaper quoted 18-year-old Minh Thu. "It's not unusual to dye your hair pink and blue; it's new and cool."

Cosplay is also said to be taking hold here, with fans of Japanese manga dressing up like their favorite characters.

Truth be told, I have yet to see anyone with pink or blue hair, and cosplay outfits just don't cut it when you're zipping around on a moped.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got another interview to do. Should it wind up being aired in Japan, you'll recognize me as the one in the Sailor Moon outfit draped in the Vietnamese flag.(IHT/Asahi: July 17,2007)

Trận Quatar quá may và rùa
Gặp Iraq trận đất Thái
Khó mà may mắn nữa
Ko thể gây sức ép với trọng tài
-----> Sẽ thua thôi
