it does not mean give up on what you are chasing... it means to "let go" what does not belong to you.

Re: Practicing English with vOzers :D

Directions: Read the following sentences. For each one, decide whether it is a simple sentence, a compound
sentence, a complex sentence, a compound-complex sentence, or a run-on sentence.

1. Jazz is the greatest American musical form, and Duke Ellington is its greatest genius.
2. Although young women want to participate in sports as much as young men, women’s sports often don’t receive equal funding from colleges.
3. The tallest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro is the subject of a stunning new IMAX® documentary film.
4. The author Mark Twain was fascinated by technology, he was the first writer ever to deliver a typed manuscript to his publisher.
5. When I visited California last summer, I spent one week in San Francisco, and I visited the nearby Napa Valley with my cousin.

// Nếu câu 4 mà thêm từ AND sau dấu phẩy tức thành
4. The author Mark Twain was fascinated by technology, AND he was the first writer ever to deliver a typed manuscript to his publisher.
thì câu có trở thành compound sentence ko ?
thanks

Not interesting, they are too much theory while this is a pratical topic.

anyway, can you explain the differences among the highlighted ones above?

A simple sentence(câu đơn) is a main clause with one subject and one predicate.
A compound sentence(câu ghép) is a sentence with 2 (or >2) independent clauses joined by coordinators: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
A complex sentence(câu phức) is a sentence with one main clause and one(or >1) subordinate clause(s). Subordinate clauses include relative clause, noun clause and adverbial clause.
A compound complex sentence(câu phức-ghép) is a combination of compound and complex sentence.
A run on sentence is a sentence with 2(or>2) independent clauses without being connected by a coordinator(or conjunction). It's a mistake to write a run on sentence.

This is basic knowledge of English writing , and it's very very very useful.
