So, when this and when that?

Concretely, in my case with ""remaining problems" and " remain problems"?

Re: Learning English with vOzers :D

Actually, you can create noun-noun compounds as you wish,by creating a noun-noun compound, and the second part of the word identifies the object or person in question

For examples:

girl friend

bed room

dining table

sex worker

......

and for the adjective-noun compounds the rules are the same too,as long as your words have some meanings, you can create as many as you can

There are no clear rules for creating a compound noun,so you'll have to remember some common compound nouns you come across

Note that

Stress is important in pronunciation, as it help to distinguish between a noun-noun compound and an adjective with a noun word
For examples:
a 'greenhouse = a place where we grow plants (compound noun)
a green 'house = house painted green (adjective and noun)
a 'bluebird = type of bird (compound noun)
a blue 'bird = any bird with blue feathers (adjective and noun)

Many common compound nouns are formed from phrasal verbs (verb + adverb or adverb + verb).

Examples:

breakdown, outbreak, outcome, cutback, drive-in, drop-out, feedback, flyover, hold-up, hangover, outlay, outlet, inlet, makeup, output, set-back, stand-in, takeaway, walkover.

in your case,i think "remaining problems" is commonly used

Hope that help you

Bond, James Bond

All I know is "1 Glenmorangie, on the rock", which means a kind of single malt Scotch whisky with ice, copying from my boss.
