Access Time And I/O Performance
2:00 AM - April 21, 2009 by Patrick Schmid and Achim Roos (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-caviar,2261-6.html#)
http://media.bestofmicro.com/7/N/193379/original/h2benchw_access_read.png
Surprisingly, the WD20EADS is even quicker than the Barracuda 7200.12, which works at faster rotation speeds. Access time quicker than 15 ms can be considered fast, while anything above 20 ms would be really slow. Hard drives selected to run operating systems and applications at fast speeds should offer quick access times, while storage drives can be slower, as you typically won’t notice the difference.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/7/O/193380/original/h2benchw_access_write.png
The fastest and slowest drives in read access times are also the fastest ones in the write access tests.
I/O Performance
As mentioned before, the new 2 TB WD20EADS does very well in access and I/O performance. Seagate obviously hasn’t optimized its new Barracuda 7200.12 for these workloads.

Throughput
2:00 AM - April 21, 2009 by Patrick Schmid and Achim Roos (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-caviar,2261-7.html#)
http://media.bestofmicro.com/7/Q/193382/original/h2benchw-read.png
We have a winner: The Barracuda 7200.12 offers the fastest throughput of this roundup, which isn’t unexpected. But it is also faster than its direct competitors running at 7,200 RPM.

PCMark Vantage Application Benchmark
2:00 AM - April 21, 2009 by Patrick Schmid and Achim Roos (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-caviar,2261-8.html#)
The application benchmark PCMark Vantage reveals a clear pattern: Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.12 came out on top in the tests that measure speed.

Power Consumption
2:00 AM - April 21, 2009 by Patrick Schmid and Achim Roos (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-caviar,2261-9.html#)
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/6/193398/original/power_requirement_idle.png
WD’s WD10EADS remains the lowest-power 3.5” desktop hard drive. The new 2 TB drive requires 5.2 W and, hence, even more power than the 7,200 RPM Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 does due to its higher platter count of four versus two or one for the Seagate drives. It’s interesting to see that a single-platter Barracuda 7200.12 at 7,200 RPM consumes about the same amount of power at idle that the 5,400 RPM two-platter Samsung Spinpoint F2 EcoGreen does.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/7/193399/original/power_requirement_streaming.png
The power consumption increases at maximum sequential throughput. The low-power drives with few platters are the most efficient. Seagate’s Barracuda 7200.12 at 1 TB requires the most power, but is still not inefficient given its relatively high performance. Other drives require up to 10 W to do the same job.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/8/193400/original/power_requirement_video.png
Full HD Video playback also means sequential throughput, but with a limited data stream.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/9/193401/original/power_requirement_workstation.png
Workstation-type I/O creates a very different load, which primarily shows that a larger number of platters and heads translate into higher power consumption. However, the single-platter drives actually do not offer significantly lower power results in idle mode.

Noise And Temperature
2:00 AM - April 21, 2009 by Patrick Schmid and Achim Roos (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-caviar,2261-10.html#)
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/D/193405/original/sound_level_idle.png
The sound level benchmarks may not always reflect one’s subjective impression of how noisy drives are. Again, single- and dual-platter drives are rather quiet, while three and four platters make more noise. Clearly, rotation speed doesn’t seem to have a real impact on noise anymore, as a 7,200 RPM drive is the quietest and the WD20EADS makes the most noise in idle mode.
http://media.bestofmicro.com/8/C/193404/original/sound_level_database.png
Again, drives with fewer platters are also quieter. Again, the perceived noise levels may differ a bit from one person to another.
Surface Temperature
http://media.bestofmicro.com/7/L/193377/original/drive_surface_temperature_c.png
http://media.bestofmicro.com/7/M/193378/original/drive_surface_temperature_f.png
Temperatures do not vary a lot, but the drives with fewer platters and lower spindle speed are the coolest ones.
