View Full Version : How to learn English effectively?

In my opinion, we should focus on learning new vocabulary that we may accidentally meet when reading books, documents or stuff written in English. I mostly learn words through games, reference books and by watching films with English subtitles. :byebye:

When we have archived a number of frequently familiar words used in normal conversations every day, we should start learning synonym. So, what is a synonym? A synonym is a word or phrase that means exactly or nearly the same as another word in the same language.

For example:
Sick = Ill
Old = Ancient
Peaceful = Quiet
Sad = Sorrowful = Unhappy...
...

We shouldn't skip the reading skill and listening skill, either. Strongly focusing on the pronunciation of every single word is helpful for us all. At school, we are often taught English by Vietnamese teachers so sometimes their pronunciations can be very confusing or different from native speakers'. What can we do to improve these skills? Practice reading and listening everyday. This helps your reading and listening skills and means that you are meeting new vocabulary all the time. It is fine to read and listen to things that are easy. After reading and listening to something, tell someone about it. Don't be shy when using English all the time!

Finally, we should feel confident and relaxed when speaking English without having to worry about the grammatical mistakes that may occur! People don't mind fixing your sentences as long as they understand what you are trying to say. ;)

Should we just focus on a/some specific skill(s)?

IMO, listening and speaking is the most important skills.

Thank you for share.
It's very useful for the new people who start to learn english.
Do you have any recommend for the bad grammar and speech problem? Like a book or a website that easy to understand?

I can understand almost everything people said, but I can't answer them because I always use wrong verb and bad pronunciation. :pudency:

Just express your idea, of course, in English. Speak out and don’t worry about making mistakes. Then, the person you are talking to may help you to fix the mispronounciations (if he is nice enough http://i.imgur.com/LuwadA1.gif)

One recommendation to improve your English is to read as many as newspapers/magazines as possible. You’ll get familliar with how native speakers use English in business or academic contexts. You should also try to analyze the sentence structure, including Subject, Ver, Object and Modifier, you’ll see you progress very well.

P/S: one of my favorite reading sources is Scientific American, sometimes Smithsonian. You may not need to underatand the full meaning but try to grasp the main ideas by highlighting the S-V-O structure.

It really depends on each individual interests. But to be honest, those 2 skills are the easiest skills that you can improve in a short time. For speaking, especially writing, you have to produce a work using your own words, so it requires a sense of language as well.

Okay, thank you. It's nice advice.
I just have a problem, I do not have anyone around for practice and speak with them.
I can fix my grammar alone by search the internet or make some stupid question topic about english on vozforum and take tons of brick myself. :beauty:
But seems I can't take my speak skill go any further. All I can is just play a game called "skyrim" and mimic the npc voice.

Time to communicate (by speaking) with real people, or to play Mmo games.
An offline rpg about fictional medieval kingdoms can only carry you so far.

You can join voice channel on discord servers which focus on games you're playing. Talk about everything, not only games but also life or maybe just chill and make friends. You can talk more easily with friends.

Finally we have our official English group :D

Anyway, back to the topic, rather "how" I'd say each person has their own way to learn something new, to absorb new knowledge so your method may not work with other, the important thing is you should find a motivation to kick your ass into English :); so let me share my experience from a newbie to a so so crap

I spent year after year with my tutor, one-on-one during my high school time and guess what, nothing changed. I remained a dump fuck and I used to hate English the most, for that particular reason :canny:

Until I found out about JRPG, it opened a new door to me. At first I didn't understand a single fuck but a dictionary (a real one, thick like a brick and heavier than that) was really helpful and for the first time in my life I held that dicktionary like my treasure:beauty:

Time went by til I went to uni English was my most beloved subject and I can say I was much better. With the help of games, movies, music (not book, I didn't even touch one or did homework:stick:) my English skills flew like a penguin :sexy:

Out to life game, tho I don't have any English cert but I can work with foreigners just fine. Been to some other countries and my clients/colleagues say my accent is really good, close to British (they are) :sexy:

Now I really want to take an IELTS exam, training on my own for awhile but it's still not enough. Hopefully we can help each other, maybe open a topic for it. Especially writing/speaking since I can't do this alone:adore:

Just took some test recently and the examiner said my IELTS would be around 6-7.0; I want to improve it to 7.5 or even 8 if possible:byebye:

So basically, game and movie and music and h̶e̶n̶t̶a̶i̶ really help me to be what I am now, more than text book and school. What's your story? :byebye:

The very first thing to improve English is to enhance your vocabulary and try to do that by writing words down on paper instead of typing. This will prevent you from spelling mistakes in future.
Remember their pronounciation, synonyms, antonyms to improve your capability of English paraphrasing.

You can improve your listening and reading simultaneously, IMO. As the key of listening is not transcribe every word, but to get the main idea and necessary detail of the speakers. This is the same as what you need to archive in Reading test.
I find writing and speaking the most difficult as they require quick, effective thinking and a touch of talent. :stick: Self-teaching writing and speaking is not possible as everyone needs someone else to correct their mistake, and he/she must be good at English too.
Just my 2 cents :byebye:

Believe me, there's no shortcut to mastering a language. You should try to break into individual doable task and practice anytime you can. Just wanna share some of my experience:
- Speaking: I got little chance to talk to foreigners in my company so I took any chance to talk to them, during a company trip or in a town hall conference. It trained my behavior and reaction so that I don't "forget" how to speak
- Reading: I read 1 scientific article before going to sleep everyday, some people prefer reading a chapter of novel or else, you can choose whatever suits your styles
- Listening: after reading an article, I listened to a podcast while falling into sleep. I usually can listen to the first ten minutes part though
- Writing: I was not born for writing so I don't care about it, it's a dull task but if you want to improve it, try to improve your Reading

Remember, perseverance is the key. Commit yourself and enjoy the journey!

you must have extremely high determination to learn English to do it this way. And this is the slacker way to learn English
- Speaking: Speak to yourself, in front of a mirror. Remember what you've said and correct it anytime you find any incorrect in your speaking
- Reading: Find an English book (romance, thriller, mystery, detective,.. whatever genre that you like) and read it. Use the dictionary or google any thing that you cannot understand. Will be suuuuuper slow at the beginning for sure but you will do it faster over time
- Listening: music (80's-90's pop, country, ... anything but hip hop and instrumental), film (with subtitle)
- Writing: Create an online blog, write whatever you want to ride (letter to crush, letter to yourself in the future, ....). It will be terrible at the beginning for sure but will be better as you read more and listen more

As you can see, it is totally effortless, but will take you long time ... like 4-5 years. But consider it will take you that much time to finish the bachelor degree, you can actually learn English during the time in the university. Imagine you go to the university, knowing nothing about English and graduate with enough English for business.

So, start it NOW

From my point of view, the best part of learning english is speaking . Because, when i studied at school or any english center, i was good at listening and speaking skills, but i was good because of they were my teacher and they taught english to me so they had to speak slowly and clearly.... And when i'm working in a english communication, foreigners speak too fast and hardly to hear. They even cant hear me talk absolutely :). So if you want to improve your english skill, i think you better care about your speaking and listening first .

Find a conversation course with foreigner volunteer would be a good way to start, you can practice with those who are willing to hear and correct your mistakes. Moreover, You could overcome your speaking phobia. You don't have to attend the courses for ages, just 1 - 2 months and you'll be comfortable speaking English with strangers :sexy:

As a supplement to vocabulary, you should build up your collocations, "English Collocations in Use" is a good book and not too difficult to follow

You dont have to join in any course just because of improving your pronunciation. Firstly and the most important in speaking skill is all about the confidence. If your boss couldnt hear clearly what you say, just talk slowly and CLEARLY to him, thats enough

Exactly, the key of speaking is to be clear and straightforward, native-like pronunciation is great but mostly ooptional. I assume he had problem with speaking phobia, when he speaks, his mind goes blank. Eventually, his co-workers and manager lose interest speaking with him. So a course of speaking would be nice, good place to start, to slowly gain confidence and develop reflexibility.

i can understand all posts in this page. I always confuse when answer others, reply and i fell so hard to say about my thought with others, friends, even in this post. i thought a lot.

Wow, because f33 was break so i find this thread, and it so interesting.:beauty: I always want to improve my english writting skill by write in english everyday, now i found it. :adore:

A story about me, i really hated english until a month ago. I really hated it when i was in my secondary school. It was so boring and when i was young, i really didn't understand why i must studied it. It follow me till the university, but as a student, i must pass the Toeic test to have thesis, so i'd been working hard for my Toeic test for a month and lucky for me when i achieved 560 :D that score can help me achieve the degree, but it not show how bad my english is.:(( I still can't have a real conversation with anyone in English, you know, Toeic easy for pass 500 or 600, it only have two parts are listening and reading, and you only have to choose one of the 4 answers A B C or D. It doesn't help your speaking or writting. And in that time, my cousin in Germany came to Vietnam, i hadn't talk to him because i was worried i make a mistake in grammar or pronuciation, i also cant listen.:brick: I felt so bad when every body but me can talk to him, and i realized how important English was. In other hand, my friend shared with me his netflix account, so i can watch so many movies or tv show in english with two subtitle english and vietnamese. :beauty:Watching it and then i suddenly decided to studied english seriously. That's my story and my movitation to study english :gach:

It just a month when i decided to study english seriously, and after watch a lot of videos in youtube how to learn english. This is my way: learn it as a hobby.:byebye:
1/ For listening skill: i watched bigbang theory, in vietnamese sub for the first time, and english for the second time. It really helpful, now i can watch it in english without translate english to vietnameses in my head and i can learn new word and how to use it it.:beauty:
2/ For Vocabulary and grammar: i decided to learn grammar again, and i bought the book Destination B1&B2 follow the suggestion of ielts muskerteer Dang Tran Tung.:adore:
3/ For reading, i read the news from CNN, BBC.
4/For Speaking, i will regist a course to improved it. I think for speaking and wrtiting you must have a teacher to correct your mistake.:pudency:

Final, i knew this post will have a many mistake in grammar or vocabulary. I'm so sorry and i hope you understand for me. Thanks for reading.:*

Your comment has lots of mistakes. But more importantly, your English is translated word-by-word. That’s not how we learn a new language.

I have tried to correct some basic mistakes in your post and I am sure there is still a lot more. You might want to rewrite it from scratch because some parts don't really sound natural. Maybe starting with something small like writing about your family or your daily life, just keep it simple and accurate, both grammar and content wise.

A bit about myself, I was one of that always-get-a-10-in-English guys when I was in high school, but I never took it seriously. Fast forward a few years, I managed to get into a 'good' university and my major is Business English. To be honest, besides from having to learn Chinese in order to graduate, my last 2 years of university didn't help much, English wise. I've forgot tons of things. You name it: Prepositions, tenses, conditional sentences and many more.

And now, in my 3rd year, I am setting out to do 1 thing, maybe more but you get it, that is to get at least an 8 in IELTS. It will be really hard but with the support from my parents and with a lot of time to spare, hopefully, I'll make it.

Oh, btw, any recommendation for a good English center(s) in Ho Chi Minh City? I'm thinking of either British Council or ACET. Also, my friend recommended IPP. I'm not sure if it's any good, the price is super friendly though.

Being introverted or not doesn't matter, what matters here is you need to practise speaking at home, for example standing in front of a mirror and pretending the reflecting image in it is another person. ;) 226552

It is not as hard as you thought. The grammar used in that sentence is something basic called "Double Comparatives" and believe me it's easy enough for any English learners to understand.

No no, both of you failed to understand each other's question and answer. Take a look at these examples:

1. I don't know where she is (Not where is she because if you put 'tobe' before a pronoun, you will form a question sentence.)

2. In the future, we don't know what the world will be (Not where will the world be..)

This kind of sentence is called 'affirmative sentences with question words'.

3. I don't care what you did in the past. (Not what did you do...) 226552

Oh wow. Yeah see this is the problem I have. I stopped actively studying English some time ago so all these linguistic glossary terms sound totally alien to me :go:.

Long-time didn't have any comment here. I highly recommend you guys (Vietnamese) to read this book https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/9807135-5-steps-to-speak-a-new-language (I think you can find a pirate version on the Internet). The author who wrote the book is Vietnamese, and he knew what's the problems of other Vietnamese learners, so I think the book is suited for us. The book was written in English, but no worry, it's very easy to read though.

In addition, to improve my listening skills, I'm listening to the podcast daily.

Hi guys, me again. Could you recommend some TOEIC documents for the new format exam?
After 3 years of working for the government, I am feeling boring now. I need to renew my TOEIC certification before I am having another job interview.
Btw, my upper sentences are ok? Please correct them. Thanks.

"600 essential words for the toeic" by Barron's is your "bible". It's the only vocabulary book that you really need for TOEIC. You can revise your grammar with "English Grammar in Use", because learning from scratch is overkill and time consuming, the clever way to actually learn grammar is learning from your mistakes. You should take the test of the mentioned above to find out which sections you really need to focus in. :sexy: IMHO, YMMV, :shame:

In my opinion, I use Memrise for learning new vocabulary. I think it is the best way for me. For you, I don't know yet, but, I should try it.

After 1 year working with Dutch guys, I wish I can spend more time in learning English during university. Because, in every working day, it's hard to explain my idea in English as well as hard to understand clearly what they saying. Now, I don't have enough time to learning English.
